Small Islands Survey
Habitat loss in West Visayas

Like most small islands in the Philippines, Siquijor, Tablas and Masbate have suffered severe habitat loss due to the stripping out of the economically valuable molave trees. Now the islands are almost totally stripped of vegetation cover and this biological disaster has resulted in the loss of unique bird species (Visayan Tarictic Hornbill, Philippine Cockatoo) and three large mammals (Philippine Spotted Deer, Warty Pig, Golden-crowned Flying Fox) from the islands.
The five-strong Filippino team will seek to identify key sites of rich biodiversity to be preserved on the small West Visayas islands by collecting scientific data on endemic and threatened birds and mammals. The team will train students, staff of the local Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local people in field research techniques. The scientific data they collect will be used to formulate management plans for the forest and for vulnerable species of birds and mammals, to plan guided tours and establish protective measures for bat caves. Local awareness will be achieved through the presentation of research results to the local stakeholders, DENR, schools in identified sites, local NGOs and scientists.
