Chongming Island lies in the estuary of the Yangtze River and is an important stop-over site for migrant birds and wintering ground for waterfowl. More than 500,000 individuals of 108 waterbird species are recorded there. The tidal land extends by about 140 meters per year but the local people and those involved in the project of the Yangtze River keep re-claiming the tidal land for economic development. As tidelands shrink, there is a greater urgency to research the waterbirds and their habitats.

The seven-strong Chinese team will study the current status of waterbirds and their habitats on Chongming Island, analyse the effects of natural environmental change and human activities and assess the habitat quality using GIS methods. Combining remote sense map the project will be able to predict what the habitat will be like in the future. Investigating different human activities and its effects on waterbirds and their habitats through scientific research and environmental education, this project will provide preliminary management plans for Chongming Island that will co-ordinate the development of local economies and the conservation of waterbirds and their habitats.
